Little sister; Dia de los muertos inspired, earthenware sculpture with underglazes, built from a clay slab
About
I was intrigued by clay at a young age when I first witnessed the skilled hands of a rural potter slowly turn a lump of clay as if by magic, into a pot. As it happened it was not until many moons later that I chanced upon the opportunity to delve ever deeper into the exploration of all things clay.
I am a ceramic artist based in Saint Petersburg, Florida, where I have lived for over 40 years. My artistic journey began in my childhood, shaped by the diverse cultures and mythologies I experienced while living in Portugal, Germany, and India. These early influences continue to resonate in my work, merging with the rich cultural landscape of my adopted home.
My medium of choice is clay, and I specialize in hand-building objects from flat slabs. I create what I refer to as narrative sculptures that tell stories. This is a unique approach that allows for both individuality and expression. The pieces can take the form of human busts, animals, or abstract designs. The layering of storytelling onto the surfaces of my sculptures creates a dialogue between the form and its narrative, inviting viewers to engage with my work on multiple levels.
My introduction to clay was initially a way to counterbalance the stresses of my professional life. I was fortunate to arrive at a time when the ceramics scene in Saint Petersburg was flourishing, offering access to a variety of workshops led by some of the world's finest ceramicists. My self-taught journey has been profoundly enriched by opportunities to learn from renowned artists such as Mel Jacobsen, Rudi Autio, Peter Voulkos, Val Cushing, and Pete Pinnell, as well as many talented local artists. Through these experiences, I have deepened my understanding of clay and developed my unique artistic voice.
